We have had increasing numbers of teachers request presentations in their classrooms as the Native perspective fits into their lesson plans. The Tribal Education Department staff actively pursues any opportunity to provide this service. We have found that these presentations bring pride, ownership, and self-esteem to our Native students in these classrooms and schools. Presentations vary from history, storytelling, crafts, and even a home economics class where traditional Native foods are discussed, prepared and tasted. Last year we averaged over one presentation per week throughout the district.
Our annual diversity week presentations at both Shepherd and Mt. Pleasant High Schools are included in this category. This involves one full day during the week where Native students and presenters come into the school and share parts of their culture, history and heritage. Teachers have the opportunity to sign up their classes to bring them to the various presentations. For the past two years every presentation has seen maximum attendance.
